San Lorenzo (ECSLR)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. It is a natural harbour at the entrance of the Bolivar Canal. It is close to the border with Colombia and connected to Ibarra by a rail link. The port exports timber.

San Lorenzo is located on the northern most part of Ecuador's coast.

Draught 6.6m.

Canal Bolivar is entered between the N point (01°22'N 078°54'W) of Isla Santa Rosa, and the S point of Isla San Pedro 1nm NE. A channel, marked by lights, leads, SE, S and SE to San Lorenzo.

Pilotage is compulsory and available during daytime only. Pilot boarding area is within the vicinity of No. 1 approach buoy. Pilot advise that the best time to enter channel is 2-3hrs before HW.

Isla Limones Light (01°14.6'N 079°02.7'W). Isla San Pedro Light (01°24.5'N 078°53.1'W).

Minimum depth over the sand bar leading to the port is 3.4m, larger vessels (up to 6.6m draught) must cross the bar at high water.

Range 2.1m.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly.

Radio Costera Guayaquil is the recommended station for passing messages at long range. The station works from 0800-2359hrs. Inmarsat communication is not possible. VHF: Port Captain: Ch 16.

Customs allowances: There is no specific allowance set by Customs. However, personal effects should be limited to one item such as one TV, one radio, etc. Penalties for non compliance result in excess/undeclared items being confiscated. Immigration: Passports have to be presented. Crew and passengers proceeding ashore must be in possession of their passport and a shore pass which will be inspected.

Initial ETA has to be sent 72 hours prior to vessel's arrival. If the vessel is arriving from ports in Peru or Colombia then ETA can be sent 24 hours prior to vessel's arrival. The ETA should be sent by telex to the local agent, Port Captain, Immigration, Customs Authorities and Health Department. Additional ETA's must be sent 48 and 24 hours prior to vessel's arrival. For not displaying Interco and/or other flags a vessel may be detained and fined by an amount determined by the local authorities.

A representative of the Health Department boards with Port Authorities on a vessel's arrival. Ship Sanitation Control and Exemption Certificates can be issued and renewed.

NOR is normally tendered on arrival at first sea pilot station.
