Cabo Rojo (DOCBJ)

Cabo Rojo has one berth which is a private installation built by Alcoa Exploration Company for its bauxite and limestone mining operations near the Haitian border, in the SW corner of the Dominican Republic. This mining operation is now controlled by Ideal Dominicana SA, the port facilities are still used for the shipments of limestone and bauxite.

The port of Cabo Rojo is located on the S coast of the island.

LOA 213.3m, beam 36.5m, draught 10.9m.

A deepwater anchorage is available immediately outside the port, the pilot will indicate the best position. Two locations: 17°51.4N 71°37.25W and 17°49.25N 71°38.75W.

The entrance channel, marked by a lightbuoy, is dredged to a depth of 10.6m.

Compulsory. The pilot boards approx 2nm off the port. An accurate ETA is important as the pilot must come from Barahona, approx 2 hours away by motor vehicle. Pilot arranged via agent based on 24hrs notice of ETA.

Ance Joseph Light, 17°55'N 071°39'W, on the jetty head. A conspicuous water tank, situated 1.5nm S of the jetty on Cabo Rojo, visible from a distance of 25nm in clear weather.

No entry or departure at night.

Range 0.6m.

Prevailing winds: E'ly gust to gale force from 0900hrs to sunset for most of the year, making berthing difficult.

Cargo documentation: According to Dominican Republic law, all cargo is discharged from a vessel into the custody of customs. Original Bills of Lading, (or in lieu thereof an adequate bank guarantee) are required by customs from the consignee before the cargo can be removed from the customs controlled port areas. Hence, neither the Master nor the agent may demand presentation of the original Bills of Lading prior to discharging, as the ultimate destination of the original Bills of Lading is the Dominican Customs Office. As this is frequently a source of confusion it is very important to clarify this matter prior to the vessel's arrival, to avoid costly delays and/or disputes.

Vessel's ETA should be sent by fax or telex to agent, 72, 48 and 24 hours prior to arrival.

Shiftings: By Port Authority orders, vessels are sometimes forced to shift to another berth within the port or anchorage, giving preference to another vessel. With a few exceptions (vessels not loading/discharging) the costs for these shiftings are charged to the vessel given preference.
