Neuhaus is situated on the River Oste, which flows into the Elbe opposite the Kiel Canal.

Draught 2.7m.

Anchoring is permitted outside the fairway, close up to the bank, with vessels in a single line.

Oste Beacon (24) stands at the outer end of a training wall which flanks the NE side of the mouth of Die Oste. Oste Leading Lights (53°50.3'N 008°59.7'E) lead SE over the outer bar. The channel is marked by buoys (numbers prefixed by "Oste") and is subject to change.

Harbour entrance is 2.9m depth at MHW, dry at LW. A flood barrage is situated 2.5nm up river. Its navigable width is 22m, and it is closed only when the water level is expected to rise to more than 1.2m above mean high water. A drawbridge over the flood barrage has a vertical clearance of 5.75m above mean high water, it is opened by day only, in response to a sound signal of two long blasts, prior notice by telephone being required for opening at night. Lock and bridge signals are used at the flood barrage, and lights are exhibited from each side of it. Berths for vessels waiting for the bridge are available on both sides. There is a radio station at the lock.
