Husum (DEHUS)

The port is divided into the outer and inner port by a railway drawbridge. Only the outer port is open to commercial vessels. The main imports are agricultural produce and timber with the main exports being timber, feeding stuffs and manufactured goods.

Husum is located on Schleswig-Holstein's W coast, opening into the North Sea.

LOA 145m, beam 21m, draught 4.1m. Turning may be difficult for vessels with a LOA of over 70m.

Anchorage is available approx 3.5nm SE of Sudfall in depths of 8.0-10.0m; better shelter is afforded approx 2nm W of the entrance to Husum, sheltered NW by Nordstrand, in depths of 7.0-9.0m but swinging room is limited.

Approach through ship channel "Heverstrom" 29nm from Mittelhever Lightbuoy by Heverstrom marked according to IALA Maritime Buoyage System "A".

Pilotage is not compulsory but advisable. Pilot will board in the Mittelhever either outside or inside the bar, according to wind and weather. Pilots may also board from the pilot vessel in the Elbe estuary. Vessels approaching from Der- Nord-Ostee Kanal or Die Elbe above Brunsbuttel can embark the pilot at Brunsbuttel. Pilot should be requested at least 12 hours before ETA through the agent, during office hours or direct to the pilot by telephone. Pilot boarding position should be agreed between the Pilot Authority and the vessel's Master.

Husum -Inner Leading Lights: Front light (red mast, white bands, 5m in height) 54°28.8'N 009°.00.3'E, on N side of entrance. Rear light (red mast, white bands, 8m in height), 40m E of front light.

Vessels carrying explosives or not gas free are not permitted night movements. Vessels over 9m in width or over 3.0-4.0m draught should report through Husum Port Radio on VHF Ch 11 or by telephone to Leitstand Sperrwerk Husum (Husum Flood Barrier) Control when passing position 54°28.25'N 008°56.35'E (E of Suderhafen), stating vessel's name, position, dimensions and destination. These vessels may enter only when visibility exceeds 1,000m (piloted vessels, with good manoeuvrability and with echo sounder and radar in working order, are exempt). In all cases permission should be obtained from the harbour authorities before entering into Husumer Au. Information Broadcasts: Vessels should monitor VHF Ch 11, every H+00 from 4 hours before to 2 hours after HW, for information on shipping movements. Flood barrage and road drawbridge: The harbour is closed by a flood barrier only when water level reaches 0.3m above normal HW; depth over sill is 2.1m below CD. Vertical clearance beneath the drawbridge when closed is 5.0m at HW. Visual lock and bridge signals are shown; to request the change of an adverse signal a vessel should make a sound signal of two prolonged blasts. Bascule Railway Bridge: Vertical clearance 5m when closed; open on request when rail traffic permits.
