Butzfleth (DEBUZ)

The port has numerous facilities for the import/export of bulk ores and chemicals. There are 6 berths in total, 1 located at the Northwest Quay, 2 at the Northpier and 3 at the Dow-Chemical Terminal. The main cargoes handled include bauxite, aluminium oxide, petcoke, ethylene, propylene and carbon tetrachloride.

Butzfleth is situated at the mouth of the River Elbe, on the west bank on Butzflether Sand.

Draught 15.0m, 80,000DWT.

Grauerort-Reede (53°40.5'N, 009°30.0'E) on the W side of the main fairway is available only to gas and chemical tankers waiting to berth at Butzfleth or for bunkering by those vessels. Only 2 vessels at a time are allowed to occupy the anchorage and a vessel may only remain anchored for not more than 24 hours. Twielenfleth-Reede (53°37.0'N, 009°33.0'E) is on the SW side of the main fairway SE of Stade nuclear power station. This anchorage is used by vessels waiting for a berth and for transfer of cargo and bunkering.

There are special regulations concerning the berthing of vessels with inflammable liquid cargoes. The river pilot acts as berthing pilot. Four tugs, obtainable from Brunsbuttel or Hamburg.

Pilotage is compulsory from Deutsche Bucht for tankers over 10,000DWT, for other vessels pilotage is compulsory from the Elbe 1 light vessel.

Pairs of lights in line, on shore N and S of the wharf, indicate the harbour limits.

Vessels with draught exceeding 11.4m must transit the River Elbe at HW.

Range 3.05m.

Tugs are available and compulsory for berthing and unberthing.

Masters of oil, gas and chemical tankers must advise WSA Hamburg via Brunsbuttel VTS Centre at least 72 hours before arrival. If passage time is shorter they must report immediately on leaving previous port. See country section for further details.

Special regulations, issued by WSD North, are in force for oil, gas and chemical tankers.
