Christmas Island (CXXCH)

Flying Fish Cove is the alternative name for Christmas Island port.

Tropical.

Christmas Island harbour, also known as Flying Fish Cove, on the N coast of the island, which is situated approx 250nm SSE of the Sunda Straits.

Harbour: LOA 180m. Offshore: LOA 192m, draught 13.0m, 35,000DWT.

Approx 675,000t of cargo handled annually.

There are no safe anchorages for merchant ships. The port barges are recovered each night and stored in the marine building.

From the vicinity of the pilot boarding position the initial approach track is approx 085° with the white wharf office sighted ahead and close S of "B" Mooring Buoy. Bulk carriers make an entrance into the cantilever berth, between Nos "A2" and "B1" Buoys, by turning to the N and stopping with the bow approx midway between the cantilever head and the buoy.

On vessels first visit, 2 supervisors will be placed fore and aft on the vessel to assist with the preparation and running of the mooring lines. Phosphate Berth: Vessels intending to tie up in the bulk rock phosphate berth (normally starboard side to) must have sufficient mooring ropes made ready prior to the arrival onboard of the pilot. It should be noted that the minimum number of lines required is 3 lines forward and 3 lines aft. Outer and inner lines are passed out to the mooring buoys forward and aft by barges. The vessel is manoeuvred into position by twin screw pusher barges. The loading placed on the buoys by mooring lines is critical. Smaller vessels (non bulk loading) may be moored between Nos "C" Buoy and SE "C" (span) Buoy or between Nos "B2" Buoy and "B" (span) Buoy. Caution: Some protection from the SE trade wind is provided by the island. Apart from this the open nature of the port provides no shelter. Main engines must be kept on 10 minutes notice. Vessels in imminent danger are unberthed without delay and instructed to drift off the island. General Cargo Berth: Vessels intending to tie up in the general cargo berth (normally port side to) must have sufficient mooring ropes made ready prior to arrival onboard of the pilot. It should be noted that the minimum number of lines is 3 lines forward and 5 lines aft. Fuel Berth: Vessels intending to tie up at the fuelling berth at Smith Point (Normally starboard side to) must have sufficient mooring ropes made ready prior to arrival onboard of the pilot. The minimum number of lines required is 3 lines forward and 3 lines aft.

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels over 150GT and available during daylight hours. The boarding position is 1nm W of Smith Point (10°25'S 105°39'E). Vessels are berthed in daylight hours only and must not approach the moorings in Flying Fish Cove closer than 1nm without instructions. Subject to prevailing weather conditions the pilot will normally board by pilot ladder (to comply with IMO document) on the starboard side approximately 1.5m above the waterline. Vessels over 150GT should contact the port authority or local agent, at least 48 hours prior to arrival. This does not guarantee the availability of a berth on arrival. The pilot, mooring crews and shore mooring lines are embarked from motorised barges. Pilotage of vessels carrying in excess of 20,000DWT cargo or ballast must seek port authority advice before contacting the pilot. This is due to the manoeuvring characteristics of deeply laden large vessels and the ability of barge and tug assistance.

The port limits are bounded by a line from a position on Smith Point (10°25'S 105°39'E) then 1.1nm on a bearing 270° then 1.1nm N then ESE to Rocky Point (10° 24'S 105°40'E).

Three oil tanks are situated approximately 0.2nm SW of Smith Point flagstaff. Tower (10°26.5'N 105°40.4'E).

Tidal streams set NE and SW, the latter sometimes attaining a rate of 1-2kts.

From Nov through to May the wet season is experienced and N and W winds during this period impede port operations. Vessels may be required to lie off the island when monsoon swells make conditions unsafe, or use alternative port of Nui Nui at Norris Point.

Customs: All vessels should contact customs prior to arrival on VHF Ch 16 to arrange a suitable time for inspection. Vessels arriving during the night are requested to advise police/customs of their arrival at 0800hrs the following morning. Vessels over 25m length are required to submit a Quarantine Pre Arrival Report (QPAR), detailing particulars of the vessel, voyage, health status and ballast water management. Vessels should advise ETA 48 and 24 hours in advance to CIPHOS, Christmas Island.

All vessels must display the yellow quarantine flag prior entering the territorial water.

Trading between ship and shore personnel is prohibited on the island. Vessels are required to have clean ballast tanks and clean ballast water. Vessels loading or discharging cargo must apply in writing for approval to undertake any engine repairs that may disable the vessel from manoeuvring in the event of bad weather.

Pratique may be requested through the harbour master or granted directly by the quarantine officer, by fax.
