Quepos (CRXQP)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. A limited number of facilities are available at the port, which is mainly used for the export of bananas. It is a port of entry.

Quepos is on Costa Rica's Pacific coast in a well sheltered position.

Anchorage may be obtained in depths of approx 29m, SW of the wharf, approx 1.25nm N of Punta Quepos.

Approaching from SE, a good clearance should be given to Islas de los Quepos and Flat Rock, and having rounded Punta Quepos, to a 2.1m shoal, on which the sea breaks at half tide, lying 0.75nm NNW of the point.

Local knowledge is essential for a vessel berthing at the wharf.

Pilotage is not compulsory but advisable if berthing alongside. The pilot will meet vessels 1nm off the wharf in a white motor boat and under favourable conditions will take vessels in at night.

Prevailing winds: NE'ly. There is often a considerable swell, and two buoys are moored off the wharf for use in holding vessels from 5.0-8.0m off whilst loading. The wharf is equipped with heavy springs and wires for securing the vessels in the heavy swell. On occasions the strength of the swell and undertow make it necessary to work cargo from an anchorage W of the wharf.

Pilot: A pilot will meet vessels 1nm off the wharf in a white motor boat and under favourable conditions will take vessels in at night. Pilotage is arranged through the agent.

Radio: Station "TIM" 500kHz and 8478kHz. Available from 0400-1300hrs.
