New Glasgow (CANGL)

These ports are now closed. It is reported that the berth at Trenton has been demolished with no new facilities for commercial vessels. Information is retained should the ports reopen. Trenton and New Glasgow are both industrial areas on East River, reached by a narrow, dredged channel, at the entrance to which is a bascule bridge to the N end of the old locks.

North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

The port is situated on the River East, 12.8km upstream from Pictou Harbour on the N coast of Nova Scotia, opposite the eastern end of Prince Edward Island.

Largest vessel handled: 445t at Trenton, 1.6kms downstream; and 376t in port, draught 5.18m.

A narrow channel has been dredged from the mouth of East River of Pictou, at the SW end of Pictou Harbour, to Trenton, about 4.5nm upstream. The channel has 3 long reaches, the first 2 being straight as far as Stonehouse Point (45°37'N 62°39'W). The channel then continues around a number of bends approx 1nm up to new Glasgow. Buoys and stakes may be moved to mark the best channel.

Not compulsory but local knowledge is required. Mariners without local knowledge are advised to employ a pilot. Pilot boards off Pictou Light in position 45°42'.5N 62°34'.0W.

Overhead power cables, with a vertical clearance of 21m and 23m, span the channel at Trenton (45°37'.4N 62°39'.1W) and further up East River in position 45°36'.1N 62°38'.8W, where there is a vertical clearance of 27.7m. Local information should be obtained before attempting to navigate the river.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly.

Halifax Coast Guard Radio (callsign "VCS") can be used for passing messages throughout 24 hours. Amver messages can be passed through "VCS". Halifax Coast Guard CRS has sites at Sambro (44°28.33'N 063°37.27'W); Ecum Secum (44°57.87'N 062°08.92'W); Kingsburg (44°16.53'N 064°17.25'W). HF and MF frequencies are used, depending upon distance from station. VHF: Ch 16.

Allowances: For each officer or crew member the allowance is 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 0.9kg of tobacco and 1.1 litres of liquor or 8.2 litres of beer or ale. A penalty for non compliance will be implemented. Immigration: Routine filing of documents is undertaken by the vessel's agent. There are no restrictions on crew and/or passengers except those who require a visa. If they do not possess a visa they must remain aboard the vessel.

Pratique should be applied for when arriving from a country which has infectious diseases or death onboard from unknown causes. Pratique is applied for through the vessel's agent. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate and Exemption Certificates can be renewed.

NOR normally tendered when vessel secured alongside berth except most tankers tender on arrival pilot station or at port limits.
