Sepetiba Terminal is an alternative name for Guaiba Island Terminal.

Guaiba Island Terminal, also known as Sepetiba Terminal, is located at the SE end of Guaiba Island, approx. 70nm from Rio de Janeiro and 3nm from Mangaratiba.

Draught 21.6m, LOA 340m, beam 62.0m, 350,000DWT.

Approx. 10,000,000t of cargo (iron ore) and 240 vessels handled annually.

The anchorage area of the terminal has capacity to accommodate up to five ships awaiting to berth at the terminal. The inner anchorage area with sandy bottom is located on the polygon formed by the following points: ..... Access to the Terminal is through a channel approx 9nm long, consisting of two sections with a bend between them. The access channel is marked by 20 light buoys. The first section starts at Green Light Buoy No 2 [Q(1).G] and Red Light Buoy No 1 [Q(1).R] both visible from up to 5nm. This channel is approx 4.0nm long, 280m wide and dredged to 22m leading in a NW direction (track 328.5°). At the end of this first section, the channel then begins to turn at Light Buoys No 7 and 8, curving round into a NE direction (on a track of 69°) towards the Guaiba Island Terminal. When reaching Light Buoys Nos. 16 (Green) and 13 (Red) the channel opens out into a manoeuvring area. A course of 58.8° should be steered for access to the North Berth (Inner). Leading marks: Front Light (white metal framework tower, concrete base; racon) (23°02.5'S 044°06.3'W). Rear Light (white metal framework tower, concrete base) (1.26nm NW of front light): The alignment (328.5°) of these lights leads along the dredged channel, marked by pairs of numbered lightbuoys (lateral), passing (with positions from the front leading light): Between Ilha das Palmas (6nm S) and Ponta Arpoador (6.25nm SE), with SW extremity of Ilha da Marambaia; then: To a position about 1nm SSE of the front light where the dredged channel rounds to the ENE and then leads to the turning basin (4nm ENE) off Terminal da Ilha Guaiba on the alignment (249°) astern of the following lights: Front Light - as above. Rear Light (white metal framework tower, concrete base) (0.5nm WSW of front light). From the turning basin (23°01'S 044°02'W) the berth can be approached directly. Instructions will be given as to mooring, according to the size of vessel. In adverse weather or sea conditions, vessels may be requested to depart their berth for safety reasons. In such an event, the Master must request pilotage and towage services in order to remove the vessel immediately from its berth. In the event of heavy rainfall, all hatches which are not being used for loading or unloading at the time, must be closed. Before mooring, the vessel's wells must be completely drained. Draining of wells is not allowed in the mooring areas.

Pilotage is compulsory. Pilot waiting area is located 23°08'.65S 044°04.6W. Pilots board about 1nm NE of Ponta de Castelhanoes, the extreme E part of Ilha Grande. Pilotage is provided by the State Pilotage Co-operative (COPRARJ) and includes the area of Niteroi. Advance notice of 36 and 24 hours is required for pilotage service. A Pilot order should be confirmed at least 3.5 hours prior to arrival at the Pilot Boarding Position. Pilot operates throughout 24 hours.

Berthing and unberthing must always be undertaken with the assistance of at least 2 tugs. Details of any hazardous or dangerous cargo must be notified, via Agent.

Mean spring range about 1.1m, mean neap range about 0.3m. The currents in the region are governed, in average, by two high tides and two low tides a day. The current along the pier and in the basin are the result of the movement of the tides. Spring tides are responsible for strong current in the N Berth, requiring special attention in periods of flooding.

Compulsory, fitted with VHF R/T. Three tugs are available at all times.

The weather in the region is of tropical type with steady temperatures throughout the year. High temperatures and/or strong and long rainfall rarely occurs. The average max. temperature is 26°C and the average min. temperature is 18°C. Temperatures can reach highs of 38°C and lows of 13°C. Rainfall is more frequent during the warmer months, from October to March, with average rainfall levels of 250mm. During the cooler months, from April to September, the average monthly rainfall is 150mm. During the spring and summer, weak to moderate NE'ly winds are prevalent.

VHF: Terminal and Pilots: VHF Ch 16, 13. callsign "Sepetiba Marine Operations". Tugs and pilot vessel: VHF Ch 16; 13. Tugs: Ch 03 (for VSLS less than 200,000MT DWT) and Ch 04 (for VSLS more than 200,000MT DWT). Note: Vessels should request anchoring and berthing instruction 4 hours in advance or when within VHF range. Additional tugs are available, subject to conditions at time of berthing. Radio: National Coastal Radio Stations Network (RENEC): The National Coastal Stations Network offers free communication facilities for messages concerning the safety of human life at sea such as: Distress calls, urgent medical advice, notices to mariners, meteorological messages, etc. The network comprises of 39 stations along the coast of Brazil and in the Amazon River, distributed as follows: ..... 1. One main station at Rio de Janeiro (PPR), with facilities available for communication via radio telegraphy (WT) and radio telephony (RT), with vessels sailing in almost every sea and ocean. 2. Three regional stations located at Belem (PPL), Olinda (PPO) and Rio Grande (PPJ), able to communicate via WT and RT with vessels up to approx 600nm distant. 3. Three local stations at Manaus (PPM), Santarem (PPT) and Itajai (PPC) responsible for communications via RT with vessels approx 200nm distant. 4. Seven restricted local stations at Santos (PPS), Paranagua (PPG), Porto Alegre (PPP), Vitoria (PPV), Natal (PPN), Fortaleza (PPF) and Salvador (PPA) able to communicate via RT with vessels sailing in the immediate vicinity. 5. The remaining 25 stations handle local RT communications.

Contraband: Brazilian laws are very strict with respect to smuggling and masters are requested to instruct their crews not to take more than 2 packets of cigarettes and other articles ashore. Cigarettes in cartons, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, narcotics, souvenirs, explosives, firearms, etc should be collected prior to arrival in port and listed with the items in the Crew's Personal Effects List and placed in the custody of the master. Immigration: All a vessel's passengers and/or crew members may only enter the national territory after their documents have been inspected by the federal police department, the revenue authorities and the port health authorities. Vessels owners are responsible for the disembarkation and the embarkation of transit passengers as well as crew members who fail to join a vessel before it sails. Such responsibility includes the maintenance and other expenses until repatriation. In the event of non existence of a compulsory deposit as guarantee to cover such expenses, owners will sign, at the federal police department, a form of responsibility inherent to such obligations as therein expressed.

Vessels should send ETA 6 days, 48 and 24 hours in advance with any change at least 8 hours in advance. Anchoring and berthing instructions should be requested 4 hours in advance or when within VHF range.

All vessels, while in Brazilian ports, must fly the Brazilian national flag from 0800hrs to sunset.

The manoeuvring of vessels drawing over 18m (South Berth) or 15m (North Berth) to be performed only during day time, latest 2 hours prior to sunset. On North Berth berthing of vessels over 80,000DWT and unberthing of vessels over 100,000DWT only permitted during daylight. Vessels over 18 years of age must be inspected by Brazilian Navy Bureau of Ports and Coasts before being permitted to load iron ore. The inspection must take place during daylight hours taking 4/5 hours to complete and must be performed at the inner anchorage after the vessel has been cleared by the port authorities.

Free pratique: Vessels which are not proceeding from infected ports may be granted free pratique, by radio, which does not exempt the ship owner or his agent from the delivery, to the Port Health Authority, of the Advice of Arrival. A vessel with free pratique is permitted to proceed directly to berth. A vessel coming from an infected port which has obtained free pratique at a Brazilian port, is exempted from further inspection for mosquitoes at other Brazilian ports of call, unless it has called en route to another infected port. The free pratique does not exempt the vessel from being visited by the port health authority when the latter considers this to be necessary, but such visits will always be carried out subsequent to berthing without jeopardising vessel operations. When there is a sick passenger or crew member to be landed, the vessel must fly Interco flag "Q". For granting free pratique the following documentation is required: ..... 1. Vessel details: a. Name, class and flag. b. Name of port and country (or Brazilian state) where voyage started and date of departure. c. Port(s) of call, country(ies) (or Brazilian state(s)) with respective dates. Mention the last 5 ports. 2. Sanitary conditions onboard: a. The occurrence of a death onboard. b. The occurrence of any sickness. c. The occurrence of any sickness with one of the following symptoms: Fever (temperature over 37.5°C) during a period in excess of 48 hours accompanied by skin eruption, jaundice, or ganglia inflammation; acute moderate to serious diarrhoea. d. The occurrence of great morality of rodents. e. The occurrence of medicine consumption during the voyage, indicate the name and quantity supplied per person. f. Amount of fresh water available onboard. Indicate where the last supply of fresh water took place. g. In case of a vessel in ballast, advise where the ballast water intake took place and the quantity. 3. Operational conditions of the systems of ejection and used water: a. Is there a possibility that faecal objects which had not been treated could be expelled in to the waters of the port. b. Description of drainage system and sanitary treatment. c. The cubic capacity of the ejecting/used water tank and its capacity in number of days of retention. d. The stock of disinfectant material, if this is the case. A Letter of Guarantee to comply with the following: 1. Confirmation of exact time of arrival of the vessel, one hour ahead of arrival. 2. Definition of vessel berthing position. 3. Deballasting of dejection/used water tank 12nm from the coast and its immediate sealing. 4. Not to jettison waste assembled onboard during the vessel's stay in port. 5. Absence of infestation by vermin (mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats) in vessel compartments. 6. Absence of cargo accidents with risk to public health and the environment.
