Alumar (BRALU)

The port consists of a private use terminal that is jointly owned by Alcoa Aluminio and Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals/AWAC (54%), South32 (36%) and Rio Tinto Alcan (10%). Alcoa manages the facility.

Alumar is located in Maranhao state outside Sao Luis.

Draught 11.8m, LOA 229.7m, beam 32.3m, 83,486DWT.

Canal da Alumar: The approach channel, entered 3nm S of Itaqui, is 3nm in length, with a minimum width of 120m. It leads SSE for 1.25nm, then; S for 1.75nm to a turning area off the main wharf. The channel and the turning area are dredged to a project depth of 8.0m LW, however both are liable to siltation. The turning circle has a diameter of 400m. The berthing basin, alongside the wharf, has a width of 50m and is dredged to 13.0m. The route of the channel is clearly defined from the entrance down to Alumar Terminal by port and starboard light buoys. Between No 3 and 4 Light buoys (1.0nm NNW) then between No 5 and 6 Light buoys (0.5nm). Then the track leads along the centre of the channel, marked on both sides by light buoys, until the turning area is reached between light buoys 22 (green) and 24 (red). The following leading lights take you into the channel: Front Light (white framework beacon, 18m in height) 02°29'S 044°21'W. Rear Light (white framework tower, 20m in height), 100m SE of front light. The alignment (150°) of these lights leads into Estreito dos Conqueiros.

Vessels over 18 years old need a certificate from a Surveyor or Classification Society, recognised by Brazilian Naval Authorities, attesting its condition to receive the cargo and be operated at the Alumar Terminal.
