Balchik (BGBAL)

This port is one of the biggest productive regions for grain in Bulgaria. Located at the sea gate of Dobrudza. The port is multipurpose port mainly used for the handling of bulk grain, vegetable oil, timber products and metal products.

Balchik is situated approx 16nm NE of Varna, on the Black Sea.

Max draught 8.0m, 5,000DWT.

No 5 Anchorage: Available at 1nm S of the head of the breakwater.

From the outer roads of Varna, the recommended track, as shown on the chart, leads NE then NNE, passing ESE of an E Cardinal lightbuoy (3nm S), which marks the outer edge of a bank which extends up to a mile offshore in places with depths of between 1.8 and 7.2m, and passing WNW of a Special lightbuoy (5nm ENE), which marks the centre of an area in which fishing and anchoring are prohibited.

Pilotage is compulsory, Pilot embarks at the outer roadstead of the port of Varna.

A light beacon is exhibited from a hillside 0.5nm NE of the harbour pier.

Only one foreign vessel may be alongside at any one time.

A traffic roundabout is centred on 43°11'N 028°00'E. This Traffic Separation Scheme is not adopted by the IMO but the Bulgarian authorities advise that Col Regs, Rule10 applies.

VHF: It is compulsory for all ships in the territorial waters of the Republic of Bulgaria, to keep double radio watch in the roads and inner waters by VHF on Ch 16 for calling and emergency, and on working channel as follows: Varna Radio: Ch 26. Varna Traffic Control: Ch 11. Pilots: Ch 14.

All vessels on arrival and departure are subject to inward and outward border control, which includes: ..... 1. Passport control 2. Customs control 3. Health control 4. Veterinary control and quarantine 5. Phyto-sanitary control and quarantine 6. Standards and metrology control The authorities of Executive Agency "Maritime Administration" provide port state control to each vessel. Disembarking is allowed in compliance with the regime coordinated between all authorities of the border control.

Health Declaration In addition, all ship's certificates and documents should be available for inspection by Executive Agency "Maritime Agency".

ETA's: All vessel's ETA's should be sent 24 hours prior to arrival, except for warships. They should notify Maritime Administration Varna and the port operator via ship's agent.

When approaching the roads, from 0800hrs until sunset, all vessels should fly their national flags. Foreign vessels should also fly the flag of the Republic of Bulgaria on their foremast.

Seven and 5 days notice and final 3 days notice for the call, but not later than 24 hours prior to arrival in the port. After arrival in the port, whether the vessel is on berth or anchorage, the Master should give NOR for handling to the port operator via ship agent.
