Cooktown (AUCTN)

The river entrance is no more than 0.5nm wide and is obstructed by a bar. The port is only equipped for the use of private and fishing vessels, no commercial trade takes place.

Cooktown lies at the entrance to the Endeavour River, NE Queensland.

Pilotage is compulsory and is available 24 hours for the following: a) All foreign vessels LOA 35m or over. b) All Australian vessels LOA 50m or over. c) Vessels towing other vessels where the combined length of the vessels is 50m or over. d) Vessels whose owners or Master has requested the services of a pilot. e) Vessels directed to use the services of a pilot by the Hr Mr. Pilotage is not compulsory if a current PEC is held by the Master. Vessels requiring the services of a pilot are required to give a minimum of 48hours notice of arrival. All bookings should be made via E-mail to Cairns VTS. Vessels arriving off the port to embark a pilot will generally be called by the pilot 30 minutes prior to pilot boarding time. All vessels approaching and transiting this port should maintain a continuous listening watch on Ch 16. Departing vessels should request a pilot 24 hours prior to departure or removal. Pilot boards in position at: 15°27.00'S 145°18.00'E.
