McMurdo Station (AQMCM)

McMurdo Station is a permanent base for US personnel and the farthest S land based station accessible from the sea. The base has a jetty, which can be reached in summer only, a heliport and nearby airstrip called Williams Field.

Southern Winter Seasonal Zone - Winter Apr 16th to Oct 15th and Summer Oct 16th to Apr 15th.

McMurdo Station is located on Ross Island, in the McMurdo Sound.

The mean annual temperature is minus 18°C. Temperature may reach 8°C in summer and -50° in winter. The average wind speed is 12knots, but winds have exceeded 100knots.

Vessels must obtain approval in advance to visit McMurdo and should contact the station 72 hrs and 24 hrs prior to arrival.
